The new Chromecast with Google TV (code name Sabrina) continues to unveil. A few hours before the launch, a reporter from The Verge was able to get his hands on a copy of the HDMI dongle in an American store. This is the opportunity to learn more about the new Google TV interface developed by the Mountain View firm.
For a few days now, the American brand Home Depot has been marketing Google's new Chromecast in its stores, while the device is not even official yet. Chris Welch, reporter at The Verge, quickly got a Chromecast with Google TV to take a look at the interface. Unsurprisingly, the interface is very close to that known to fans of Android TV.
As expected, Google is therefore abandoning Android TV for Google TV. Little by little, the Mountain View company would like to abandon the “Android” brand. Since 2012, the word Android has gradually disappeared from the Google ecosystem. For example, Android Market became the Play Store and Wear OS by Google replaced Android Wear.
“The new Chromecast finally has a suitable menu system and user interface,” says Chris Welch. Until now, Chromecast content has simply streamed content directly from a smartphone to the TV.
To navigate in this interface, Google accompanies the Chromecast with a remote control. It is possible to launch a series or a film directly via the interface without having to go through your smartphone. Moreover, it is still possible to broadcast a series or a movie via your phone or your tablet, as on the old Chromecast.
Unsurprisingly, the Chromecast lets you install your favorite streaming apps, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney Plus. All the contents of your VOD services are highlighted on the home page of the interface. Google mixes the productions available on Netflix and others in order to facilitate user research. This is the main novelty of the Google TV interface. No need to shop around Netflix before digging into Disney + and Prime Video.
